I am slightly overweight. What kind of saree should I opt for?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009
It’s all about choosing the right fabric. A saree in a right fabric draped gracefully (fitted neatly and without any unnecessary tuck-ins) can literally make you look 5 pounds lighter.
Sari
  • Pick lighter fabrics such as georgettes, chiffons, crepe, etc. instead of stiff ones. Avoid heavy cotton which will make you look heavier.
  • Always buy saris which will drape and fit close to your body.

Saree

  • Avoid light shades. Dark and enriching colors works best if you are overweight.
  • Make sure your saree is draped neatly. (Do not tuck in unnecessarily to adjust the look of your saree)
  • If your saree is of a heavy or thick fabric, then avoid tucking too many pleats at the waist. Gracefully, adjust the length of your saree so that it’s evenly draped across your body.
  • Avoid shiny or glossy fabrics.

Sleeveless Blouse

For casual moments, stick to a simple blouse, with minimal embellishments, that is comfortable.

Halter Neck Blouse

Parties and social gatherings are perfect to flaunt fashionable and stylish blouses such as halter neck, bikini style, off-shoulder, etc., of course depending on your body type.

Embellished Blouse

When it comes to weddings or festive occasions, it’s a good idea to choose a blouse that is designed in a simple and traditional manner but which flaunts heavy embellishments.

For slim types short sleeves, puffed sleeves, ruffles, ruching and heavily embellished blouses look best.

Long Sleeves Blouse

For those who are on the plump side it’s best to stay away from a lot of embellishments or trimmings. Simple and clean cuts look best. As far as sleeves are concerned, 3/4th sleeves or long sleeves look extremely flattering.

How To Drape A Sari

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

step1At least part of the secret of draping the sari perfectly are the “underneath” garments – a waist-to-floor length petticoat, tied tightly at the waist by a drawstring (No elastic, please!) along with a tight fitting blouse that ends just below the bust – short sleeved or sleeveless, with a variety of necklines.

step2

Starting at the navel, tuck the plain end of the sari into the petticoat for one complete turn from right to left. Make sure that the lower end of the sari touches the floor.

step3

Beginning from the tucked-in end start making pleats, about 5 inches in width. Make about 7 to 10 pleats and hold them up together so that they fall straight and even.

step4

Tuck the pleats into the petticoat slightly to the left of the navel, and make sure that they are turned towards the left.

step5

Drape the remaining fabric around yourself once more left to right, and bring it up under the right arm and over the left shoulder so that it falls around the knee-level.

step6

The end portion thus draped is the pallav, and can be prevented from slipping off by fixing it at the shoulder of the blouse with a small safety pin.

RAIR Sari

Opt for shades that strike the eye. Any dark shade that is warm and enriching at the same time would complement your complexion. Avoid plain pastel shades and pale colors that blend into your skin. However, printed or textured pastel shades would give a very pleasant look.

Always try and experiment with warm and enriching colors such as brick red, maroon, mustard, emerald green, turquoise, etc. Avoid colors with blue tones, like navy, dark blue, etc along with dull and dark shades such as dark brown, dark grey, etc.

How to buy flattering clothes?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

DOs

  • Emphasize your assets: Identify your assets and wear clothing to highlight that part. For e.g., If you have great legs, show them off with an A-line skirt
  • Learn to minimize other parts: Wear dark colors, thin fabrics that layer smoothly, and well-tailored garments in solid colors or small prints.
  • Boot-cut jeans flatters almost most body types, so it’s quite a safe investment. See for yourself in a full-length mirror how well they suit you.
  • If you have bigger waistline, it’s a good idea to stick to slightly longer shirts/t-shirts/tunics/kurtis to cover the bottom.
  • You can opt for collared clothes if you possess a long and thin neck as that looks extremely flattering.
  • Most important of all, well tailored clothes look the most flattering.

DON’Ts

  • Do not wear clothes which focuses too much or too less on your body type.
  • Do not try to buy oversized clothing to camouflage the areas of your body that you don’t like.
  • Do not buy thin or skinny jeans unless you possess the perfectly proportionate hips and legs. If you have very thin and narrow hips or heavy hips, it’s a good idea to stay away from it.
  • Be careful with stripes and checks. Avoid horizontal stripes or bold checks if you are short and broad as they tend to make you look shorter.
  • Avoid clothes with bold prints or motifs if you are short and petite.
  •
